Has anyone ever shipped a bike to Australia?
If "Yes"
Who was the carrier?
Was it by Sea or Air?
How was it packed - dedicated bike box - Scicon or similar or bubble wrap and a cardboard box from an LBS?
How much did it cost?

Thanks

Roger

  • Last time I had to do this I used a cardboard bike box (the ones bikes are shipped to shops in), shipped it sea freight with Pickfords and it cost about 100 quid. That was about 1998, so prices will have risen.

I recently used www.interparcel.co.uk and they used DHL.

I've just had shipped a stripped down frame, forks and components here (all used) to Oz-which was air freight and took 4 days. I put it in the smallest box it would fit in which from memory was 110x52x19cm. The wheels I hand carried back after my holiday to the UK so didn't cost anything but they could be put into a seperate box and sent seperately as I don't think the bigger bike box to fit a complete bike was acceptable - though you try and/or phone and ask.

Overall, from Glasgow, it cost 100 quid for the frame box (which was by far the cheapest quote - even from companies which quoted sea freight as an option) + I got hit with a $46 (about 18 quid) for a quarantine inspection (unavoidable I believe). If you find a better way of doing it can you let me know, I'd be interested in it for the future.
