Hi all

I've recently bought a 10 speed Mirage chainset for my 9 speed configured training bike, and fitted a 10 speed chainring to my 9 speed racing bike. I'd assumed they'd be compatable, however I've snapped the chain on both bikes which has never happened before. On the race bike this has happened three times. What gives? is the narrower tooth knackering the chain? On the Mirage chainset it seems (in the little ring) to keep grabbing the chain and making it fall off. Both bikes have new cassettes and record 9 chains.

All advice gratefully received.

I have just fitted a Veloce 10 speed compact chainset to my 9 speed gear train. LBS advised that this would be OK. Only done a 100 miles or thereabouts and all seems well so far.

The teeth are not narrower. The 9 and 10 speed rings are exactly the same except for the inner edge of the outer ring's mounting tabs which are machined to make the rings sit 0.4mm closer to the inner ring.
I'd rather walk than use Shimano
