Creaking cranks - upgrade?

My Gary Fisher HKEK has always suffered from creaks when I'm hammering it, only when in top gear, and I've always thought it's probably down to flex in the big cog, which is a Trushift, apparently, and came as standard on the bike.
What would be a sensible upgrade to try and lose the creaking and flexing? I've just sold a Kona which had Race Face Atlas which looked bomb-proof but would that be overkill? It looks pretty heavy too.
Would I have to change the bottom bracket if I change the front cogs? What about the rear cogs? You can see I'm not all that familiar with this side of things.
