A reduced speed limit of 30km/h for motorists in Dublin is to be introduced by the city council.

The introduction of the limit, down from the present 50km/h, is imminent and other cities are likely to follow suit.

Excellent! Although if they did it in London I'm not sure it would actually help the cars go faster, since they all average less than that.

Do cars in Ireland have their speedos marked in kph?
This post contains traces of nuts.
  • It's one thing having a law, it's another thing entirely enforcing i.t.

How are they going to do that?

I'd've thought they'd be Dublin the speed limit, not reducing it.

The 20 MPH speed limit has not made much difference in Portsmouth but the thing that maters for me is that if they do hit someone the police will determine the cars speed and if they were found to be going faster than 20mph they will have to justify there actions in court.

About 8 years ago my other-half-to-be took me to ROI to meet her family ( yes she is 100% Irish ) and our hire car was in KPH and so were the speed limit signs yet the distances were in miles! How Oirish was that? Obviously many a joke was made..

They said the same about seat belt law.
They said the same about drink driving.
They said the same about mobile phone use.

The effect isn't instant, it takes time. Campaigning to keep it high profile and a positive attitude helps.
  • And they're still saying the same thing if they're not petrol-head libertarian fools!

Driving is as close to unregulated as it can be ni this country!

I was in Dublin last week and my mate told me about this, I hope it works. Here a lot of residential estates are 20mph, the only town wide scheme I've seen so far in Scotland is Caldercruix and nots big.

It was the other way around eight years ago, (most) distances were in km but speed limits were in miles. The speed limits were finally changed over to km/h in Jan 2005.

Yeah we did that on purpose to keep the Brit visitors over from the "Mainland" confused and amused.

In fairness it was a bit of a mess for quite some time, in particular the random mixture of units on directional signs. You had to learn to distinguish the likely unit by the age of the sign. Even when units appeared consistent, the distance to the next town on many a rural sign would be as likely to increase as decrease as you got closer to it.

In light of this the overnight swapping of the speed limits was quite a surprise to many!

I, for one, am glad the powers decided to put everything in KM.

Blorg: is that you from boards.ie? If so, it's K Raam here, if not, well, it's still me
