It's busy through the city with plenty of stops for lights. The Broughton interchange (M6/M55 roundabout N. of city) is very busy indeed but there is an underpass if you are not keen. After that it's OK up to Garstang - a pretty good run. Plenty of traffic but has a cycle lane. In fact you'll find cycles lanes here and there in the city too. If you don't know Preston, I'd just stick to the A6. Overall it is pretty busy but nothing out of the ordinary. I know Bolton a little and the two places are pretty comparable I reckon, perhaps Preston is a little busier.'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0

as above preston is busy, there are good quiet off road cycle routes along the old tramway and riverside and through ashton park to the nationnal cycle route at cottam/bartle hall to the A6 but if you don't know the area they can be tricky to find.though good maps of all the cycle paths in preston are available, poosibly for download, the one you'd need is preston and south ribble . found this 2 page map.

i beleive that there is a good route out of preston to the north on the canl side path though i haven't used it yet.0 -
The canal goes into the country, and from Preston to Garstang is over 25 miles that way. (P 2 G is 12 miles on road)
I live just near to the Broughton interchange and although its busy I get round it Ok , just watch the 3 lanes before it.
If you are coming up the A66 through Walton- le- Dale,( the tram track works best from Chorley direction , on the A6 Behind Sainsbury's just after the M6 at Bamber Bridge.) just follow the A6 and look out for Sustrans route 6 or 90 signs.
North of Preston you can get off the A6, turn right at Bilsborrow and follow the country lanes through Claughton to Garstang
When are you coming through? Are you cycling, or in a car?
The easiest way...
PM me and I could arrange somewhere to come and meet you south of Preston and guide you through , I don't work so am available everyday.

Came through Preston last summer, coming north from Leyland, think I took a wrong turn coming into town, ended up on a middle lane of a three lane carridgeway with cars whizzing past both sides, most disconcerting! :?
No probs once into the town itself, nice ride out from what i rememberYou can lead an elephant to water but a pencil must be lead0
