Seatposts

The seatpost that came with my bike is 260mm (approx). My mate says its too small and i'll need to buy a bigger one (it's on its maximum 'reach'). What do I need to look for as there is so much choice? Obviously I'd love a carbon one but they're far too expensive. I don't really want to have to spend much more than about £25. Can I get a decent one for this? I saw a carbon one on ebay for £25, it was an Outland one, but can't find anything about them so am a bit dubious about its quality. However, it was Rytland Cycles that were selling it.
Advice please!
Cheers.

Have a look for a seatpost called a SMICA. Best for the money by far.0
-
SMICA are made by Post Moderne and are available on www.wiggle.co.uk
They are well made,light,but inexpensive.
Easton EA50 and Raceface Evolve are generally well regarded too.
If you have deep pockets get a Thompson.
You will need to check the diameter,of your existing one, which is normally marked,if not find someone with some calipers to measure it for you.
Ideally get one that is at tleast 350mm long.2006 Giant XTC
2010 Giant Defy Advanced
2016 Boardman Pro 29er
2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
2017 Canondale Supersix Evo0 -
Cheers, I've just looked on my seatpost for the diameter. Am i correct in thinking a circle with a diaganol line through it means diameter? I wish i'd paid attention in D&T now.
If it does, my seatpost is 31.4, yet all the seatposts i can find around that size are 31.6. I'm confused! Anyone in the know able to help me please?0 -
If its 31.4 you will need a 31.4, simple as that.0
-
Oh so it is right? Looks like its going to be a pain of a search to find one. Cheers.0

Its an uncommon size, mostly seen on roadbikes. What bike is it for?0
-
A Focus Black Forest. Bloody Germans being awkward as usual! (no offense meant to any Germans!) I should have learnt from the fact my German car keeps breaking and not bought a German bike!0

It's a shame you can't get the smica in that size, cos i think for the money it's a top bit of kit. I have the post and the stem on my rock lobster, i could have afforded the much more expensive Easton EA70 or a Thomson, but the smica is lighter than either of those and well regarded in the strength dept for half the price, no contest for me.

I've just read on a website that "A seat post needs to fit your frame exactly - within 0.2mm". As mentioned my seatpost is 31.4mm, so would a 31.6mm seatpost (which seems to be a more common size) be acceptable? Or does it HAVE to be 31.4mm?0
-
It may, but i'd say it would be a bugger to get in, if at all.

The previous owner of my bike had put a 27.2 in a 27.0 - it fits, but it was bl**dy tight. Took all my considerable weight to adjust. Wouldn't recommend it.

Yeah as i suspected. Cheers people.0

You can buy shims which would alloy you to use a smaller diameter, but again, they are not recommended.

Went for a 25 mile ride this afternoon and decided its definitely time to get my new seat post.
So having searched a few websites for 31.4mm seatposts, here are the ones I've found...all FOUR of them!!! (well, four within budget)

Other than price, is there any real difference, bearing in mind I dont race etc so weight isnt a big issue, well a matter of 30g or so anyway. I'm leaning towards the Ritchey Pro V2 or Selcof Team simply because they're 400mm long.0 -
I'd go for the Ritchey. great piece of kit.
As for the +/- 0.2mm, that is wrong, the maximum allowed difference is 0.1, and preferably exact.0 -
27.2-31.4 shim will sort it http://www.bonthronebikes.co.uk/338-19663
then ebay yourself a cheap post, i got a mint Easton EC70 carbon post for £25 !!!, if not all posts are 27.2, but get one with a good clamp, nowt mor anoying than a creaky moving saddle0 -
i'd go for the pro V2, from wiggle, because it's a one piece post rather than a bonded one.0
