A Better Bike?

Hi all, I'm looking for a general all round bike that won't fall to bits at the sign of the first trail. There's so much information on t'internet it's hard to decide.

Can I get a better bike than a 2007 Hardrock Sport HYD Disc for £318.....? or less.

Are we paying a lot for just the brand name?

Is the vee £250 > disc £299 > Hydraulic £318 upgrade worth the extra on the Hardrock?

Will the 2007 bikes drop in price much more?

Thank you knowledgable ones, I know yo umust get fed up of these same type questions but then the market is always changing.

Cheers,
Stewart.

The Mongoose Tyax Elite is a better buy, as it has a damped fork, & weighs less than a Hardrock & it's cheaper at £280(ish)

Lots of recent threads on this price band and the hardrock worth looking for. I agree with the above, the Mongoose is a better bike, but do try it out.
  • Thanks for your replies, I hadn't thought of Mongoose but it looks like a nice bike, and as you say it's cheaper too :) It's always good to have a couple to audition and compare. Cheers.
  • I've decieded on the Mongoose Tyax Elite, it seems to get nothing but good reviews.

While I prefered the Hardrock and a drop from £429 to £319 is temping and I do prefer the styling, and the hydraulic brakes I'd love to try - the Mongoose has won.

I found the Tyax for £280 at Wiggle + £28 of Extras or £252 at Triton.

Now I 'could' add Shimano LX585 Hydraulic brake set from Wiggle, which with the discounts would take the total to £340.

So dear enthusiasts/experts is it viable to fit Hydraulics to the Tyax? Is it worth it?

    And

Would there be any second hand value in the brakes I take off the Tyax?
Do I just buy from Triton for £252 and keep a beadie eye on Ebay for an hydraulic brake set in the hope I get one cheaper than Wiggle's £88?

Thanks for any advice, I know it's not a £1k plus purchase but both these bikes seem popular starters and I hope my questions will help other too.

    Thanks.

The brakes would fetch a little 2nd hand. I'd see how you get on with them, then think of upgrading in the future. Have a look at the tyax Super too.
  • Cheers SS, the Super is too expensive for me, I can't fathom the £110 more, although I do like the blue.

The Elite it is, from Triton, same saving as the £28 of Wiggle extras but I can spend 'em later.

28 quid ssaving is nice, but paying the extra at your local shop is well worth it for the service, set up, testing for size, aftersales care etc.
  • Was just thinking the same, it's not all about the bottom line price. I'm gonna go and try to find a Mongoose dealer that's local tomorrow, also I'd like to size the bike, the guide says Large but it's gotta be right.

For any Tyax Elite riders/reader 6ft, 34" Leg, 12.5 Stone, pit to wrist about 25".
    Large in Mongoose sizes?

Its going to be about the L size, but its always worth trying the model either side, as we all have different dimensions (and models vary too). I am the same measurements as you, ride a 17inch GT Ruckus and 20 inch GT Zaskar. Lots of variation.
