I did it! My first driving lesson in nearly three years!!

He said that I was really good and I should be 'up to speed' in no time. Still am totally loyal to my bike though, the car will strictly be used when moving house, when it is snowing and when wearing a pretty dress :)

I think you should perform a public service by quizzing your instructor in detail about all the rules and etiquette concerning cyclists on the road. Get her/him to explain to you exactly how a driver should respond in every situation. If (s)he doesn't know, (s)he will find out and then there is a good chance that these good habits will be spread to others under instruction.

If, on the other hand, your instructor says that all cyclists are a menace and should not be allowed on the public highway, you'll know what to do!

  • my other bike is a Subaru Impreza - I've never driven it while wearing a pretty dress mind!

(So, Mr Driver, I DO pay road tax actually, and I probably pay more than you, so I politely suggest YOU f*** off and buy a copy of the f***ing Highway Code and look up 'cycle lane' in the index. F***wit.)
There's always one more idiot than you bargained for.

actually one of the first things my instrucor asked me when I told him that I am a cyclist was "so... do you stick to the cycle lanes then?"

I responded with "cycle whats? :) - no honestly I do as much as possible, it would help if there were fewer cars parked in them"

We didnt really talk about cycling after that. At one point he told me to slow down because I was going too fast in a 20mph zone, i giggled to myself as I realised that I regularly break the speed limit on that road when cycling.

I do get a bit militant about cars parking in cycle lanes I'm afraid. Best was when I scooted a load of neat Ribena through the sun-roof of one - right onto the driver's seat. I bet it made a mess of his pretty dress

As for driving, it's a necessary evil. Still, escalating costs and climate change seem to be having a slow effect on changing people's habits.

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!
  • Good luck! I finally passed my test almost exactly three years ago - such a good feeling when you succeed!

In fact, my avatar icon is taken from a picture of me peeling the 'L' plates off the back of our car... :D

Still a better cyclist than driver though

10 mins into my first driving lesson, my instructor said "do you ride a bike?"

    me: "yea, why?"

him: "yea, i can tell, you've got good road sense, i can always tell when people cycle"

tadaa. maybe everyone should ride a bike before they learn to drive.

Did he then tell you that leaning to one side doesn't make a car turn and you have to use the steering wheel.?
  • Had a classic today, riding back from Skipton, took a bypass round Burnley to avoid traffic. Whilst minding my own business riding along, a car overtook me, with right indicator still on, the driver then decided he actually wanted to turn Left up the street. Had to jam all on to avoid hitting the side of him.

Turns out he was a learner driver, the driving instructor wound down his window and called me all the names under the sun.

For the rest of the ride home I was in a rather confused state, well more confused that normal that is.

Got to thinking, is it any wonder that some drivers turn out the way they do when you have idiots like that teaching you.

Also, when is it going to stop raining, think i might grow a large beard and build a big wooden boat.

    God help us all.

Good luck with your driving lessons, and welcome to financial oblivion when you do pass and get a car :!:

The bloke who taught me to drive also taught Ian Botham, so he said. It was in Somerset and I did meet Beefy's parents, so his claim was entirely plausible.

My driving instructor said the same thing roughly, but said the she could tell because cyclists look further ahead and react sooner to other things happening on the road. She said they reacted as if other road users where threats not obstacles.
