Inner tubes cut on inside - any ideas
I've done 104 miles on my new wheels but I've had two punctures.
One front, one rear. Both have been the tubes on the inner (rim) side and both between 4" and 6" from the valve.
I've checked the rims, the rim tape is well seated and there are no obvious causes.
Tyres have been inflated to 115-120psi before setting off.
Wheels are DT Swiss 1850's. I bought Continental Race28 52mm inner tubes (to cope with the semi-aero rims) and have mounted Conti 4000 GP's.
Are there any known issues with this setup? Are the tubes rubbish?

check your rim tape for cuts, or not being wide enough to cover the spokes. Check the spokes for sharp bits. Did you remember the position of the tube before you pulled it out? this is where to start looking.Cheers

I currently use these tubes and they have been fine.....You may have had a bad batch if they are failing in the same place. If you can be bothered go to the LBS and ask if they have had returns with these tubes.
They may replace them if there are issues.0 -
I've put another Conti Race28 tube in and I'll try again tomorrow.
Unfortunately I don't know if the two failures happened in a corresponding place on each wheel, just that they were between 4-6 inches from the valve. Which side of the valve I don't know.
On the latest tube I've fitted I've marked the orientatation of the tube so I should have a better idea should the same happen again.
I ordered a couple of the same tubes along with the pair of Conti 4000S from Ribble (last batch were from ChainReaction) so when the postie tries to redeliver that lot on Tuesday hopefully that'll remedy any production run issues.0 -
You don't say what type of rim tape? After my third puncture I realised the tape was bulging and allowing the sharp end of a spoke to connect. Now I use Veloplugs held in place with some insulation tape - no more punctures!0

Oh I've no idea.
It's just the stock stuff that came with the wheel set.
From memory the decals on the tape read 16x622 and it RR 1450 (I guess its really designed for the 1450s and Mon Chasserals) but thats what came in the box. :roll:0 -
Apologies for digging this thread up but this is the third failure in virtually the same place (3-5" from the valve on the inside, one on front, 2 rear).
I've had the rim tape out, cleaned the tape and rim thoroughly and stuck some new GP4000S's on.
Latest was 3 miles from home but I was off work that day and it was nice and sunny so I walked it rather than faff on.
I've had the rim tape out, cleaned the tape and rim thoroughly but I'm really quite p!$$ed off now so I've stuck the crud AT400's that came with the bike with the Mondo Pros on and will probably see out the winter with these.0
