1. have just got into biking and have been looking at a few magazines - can anyone tell me what BB and its angle means/does to a bike?

2. in mags, photos of bikes always seem to show them standing up against a background with no support - is this just photoshop trickery?! - no particular need to know - just curious!

Thanks

BB is the bottom bracket. Its the bearings that the chainset runs on and the connection between cranks, held in the frame. The BB height (I presume you were meant this) is the distance of the centre of the BB from the ground. Higher BBs give better ground clearance but don't feel as stable at speed as a low BB.

Look at the rear wheel and you can often see a metal rod holding the bike up, hidden against the spokes.

  • For MTBs you can usually hide a stick behind the tyre, jammed between tyre and chainstay.

But yep, we quite often get the bike as close as possible to balanced, let go, photographer hits the shutter, helper grabs bike before it falls over.

I'm going to start telling people it's a magazine journo Jedi mind trick though.
