Is it always necessary to face the BB shell before installing new cranks?

Despite agreeing with SS, it is an unfortunate fact that many bike manufacturers don't seem to share his opinion. More's the pity.
You might be lucky on a good handmade frame, but more than likely not.

Well, looks like I am going to have to get it done by the LBS
Its a Shimano Hollowtech II BB - its a new frame and I could have fitted it myself (minus the facing - I have all the tools)
If I get my LBS to face it I may as well get him to fit the rest as he pretty much charges £20 flat rate for jobs (unless they are minor)
