Is it always necessary to face the BB shell before installing new cranks?

Cheers

It is essential when using cranks with external bottom brackets.
  • Despite agreeing with SS, it is an unfortunate fact that many bike manufacturers don't seem to share his opinion. More's the pity.

You might be lucky on a good handmade frame, but more than likely not.

I think once you have had it done once it should be ok from then on.

  • Well, looks like I am going to have to get it done by the LBS

Its a Shimano Hollowtech II BB - its a new frame and I could have fitted it myself (minus the facing - I have all the tools)

If I get my LBS to face it I may as well get him to fit the rest as he pretty much charges £20 flat rate for jobs (unless they are minor)

    Oh well!
