white things in Cadel Evans' nose

Have just been watching a recording of final TT in the Tour, since I missed it at the time, and noticed Cadel Evans warming up on the turbo with what looks like tissue stuffed up his nostrils. Bizarre. Did the poor git have a cold or is this is some kind of weird warm-up technique?
