Havn't had any today. Muesli for breakfast, with half fat milk. Home made sandwich for lunch - three slices bread, cheddar, salami, lettuce and light mayo. 250ml PJ smoothie this afternoon for a snack. 18 miles on the bike this evening at around 15-16mph. Canned veg soup + slice of bread at around 20.30. No further snacking.

Surely this will result in a calorie deficit for the day! How little must I eat? I've lost about 1kg since I started riding two months ago. I do now have well-toned lumps growing on my legs, but my belly looks just as flabby.

  • What a coinicidence! I have just purchased 4 blueberry muffins because while I was in the shop, they talked me into it. Now I am sitting at my computer but it's a bit like those paintings where the eyes seem to follow you wherever you go. There is currently a door and 5 inches of brickwork between me and them, but I can still see them - and they can see me. HELP!

    3600 calories = 1lb weight loss.

So 1000/1100 deficit per day = about 2lb/1kg in a week.

    1hr on bike at 15mph (12/13 stone person) = about 600 calories.

Thanks for the rough guide. More exercise, less food yet to come.

Managed 1hr22 @ 16.9mph yesterday. That's about my speed limit. Planning a more relaxed ride this evening.
  • Sit ups and the like will help tone up your belly area. I like to think my midriffular excess is relaxed muscle

No need for a tight belly on a bike, which is why so many roadies have bellies that hang like little sacks. Bless. MTB folk are tighter because there's more upper body stuff involved, and the midsection connects it all!

Been doing some "plank" exercises to help core strength. I don't mind these, but I'm not keen on sit-ups. Don't have the discipline or will to do excersises I don't enjoy. Thank goodness for cycling.

Tried swimming for a while, which I like, but public pool opening times are rubbish and it gets a bit hectic at busy times.

You need a good core strength so that your legs have a solid torso to lever off though don't you? Hence why when pros are rolling their upper bodies hardly move at all.

Hang like little sacks.....thats a horrible phrase!

    On roadies it's an "aero-belly" :D
Personally I'd say that cakes are the reward for cycling.
Chocolate chip muffin and a bacon & egg butty are the best.

What do I ride? Now that's an Enigma!
  • Or you're Miguel Indurain, who didn't have a belly, just his lungs were hanging out

Probably well choked now he knows the truth(Riis's admission) as to why he didn't get the 6th TDF victory
    so many cols,so little time!
  • I have yet to meet a cake I didn't like.

Last time I tried to diet I increased my cycling and lowered my calorie intake and my body fat increased and my muscle mass decreased so bugger that.

Cakes and cycling are natural partners. Like chips and cycling, or curry and cycling.
    never knowingly underfed

    Miguel Indurain
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In retirement he is a member of the Spanish Olympic Committee and of UCI's Professional Cycling Council. He is also Honorary President for the Miguel Indurain Foundation. He often attends cyclotourist events such as L'Etape du Tour.
  • You'll only find fat bellies on testers, where there are no hills or sprints.
