disk brakes wheels for touring/commuting

I haven't found any 700cm wheelset with disk brakes hubs. So I'm thinking of either DT 240 hubs with dt 7.1 rims (or perhaps cheaper 340?) or just Shimano XT hubs with Mavic A719 rims. Any suggestions? I commute 20-30 miles a day, summer winter rain, mostly on crappy roads or towpaths and my current wheels based on Deor hubs lasted only over a year. Is the DT stuff an overkill?
Cheers

You can pick-up XT hubs pretty cheap, particularly the 6-bolt rotor ones. Mavic do a pair of 700c disc wheels - Speedcity? As you're running discs there's less need to run heavier rims as they don't wear out - it just depends on how big a tyre you want to run. DT hubs are probably overkill unless you want them to last a long time.

Would avoid the Mavic factory wheels. Deore disc hubs on Mavic 319 or similar would be great if built right. There are lots of places in Germany which do excellent prices on this stuff. Places like Roseversand speak English too.

I think DT hubs would be overkill, but why not? They should last like champs. But having them knicked would be greatly upsetting.

Given your old hubs are deore then you're looking at 135mm rear hub width (road hubs are 130)

So any good mtb hub will work - Hope, DT, XTR. If it was me I'd go for a centrelock hub as they build into a slightly lighter setup. Perhaps DT or XTR.

Hopes are serviceable and last well. Lighter than XT too.

as for rims. Unless you are heavy, ride rough trails and/or are generally unsympahetic then I'd be tempted to advise Open Pro rims. Built well they'll handle most things. The A719 (or the cheaper A319) are robust but build into a heavier wheel. I use the A319s on my winter wheels. The DTs are lighter still at 540g so they may be a good compromise. OPs are 435g.

  • I've got DT hubs and rims with discs. Ride very nicely
