I'm a MTB'er but have been approrached by a friend with the following question! Needless to say i don't have a clue so I resorted to asking you guys naturally! The question was:
I've been checking out different Shimano crank sets in preparation for my Pyrenees trip. http://www.pyreneesmultisport.com/Cycli ... 20Traverse)%20Itinerary.htm
I can only find 52 / 39's, can you get other ratios such as 52 / 37, I would appreciate your advise?
Any clues!?!?

Yes. You need to look for a compact chainset. Shimano do them with 50/34. If you hunt around you may be able to find some with 50/36 or 48/34. You can also change the rings individually but that gets a bit more tricky because you have to find ones with the correct BCD to fit your cranksToday is your day, your mountain is waiting, so get on your way {Dr Seus}0

38t is minimum inner ring if you use shimano 130bcd cranks..
i reckon a 50/34 shiamno ( compact 110bcd ) woudl suit better..0 -
A new compact chainset is definitely the best way. You can pick them up quite cheaply now and there are other brands, such as FSA, TA and Stronglight, which are compatible with Shimano.
Failing that if your friend can fit a 29 rear sprocket that should give him a lower gear than he has now. It depends on how strong a cyclist he is as to which would be the best option.0
