i want to get a front mechanical disc and am on a budget of about £50. can anyone reccomend anything?

For the money you would do far better looking at a hydraulic brake, you don't say if you already have a rotor, if you haven't that will be extra on your budget.
Most come fully bled and ready to fit, take far less fiddling to keep at best performance as well.
These are about the best for the money, as much as a worthwhile to have mechanical.

or single hydraulics.

I did have Avid bb7 before going to hydros and they are very good. Sold front and rear with levers £65 on ebay so finding a single should be very cheap.0
