Courteous drivers

After all the driver bashing we have been doing, I thought I'd comment on the few courteous drivers that I see while out on the road.

There are actually quite a few out there. They let me out of junctions and other similar situations. However normally I'm waiting at the junction for a gap to appear so I can pull out and the last car before a big gap in the line slows down and waves me out.

Of course I don't look a gift horse in the mouth, and pull out giving an appreciative wave. Does anybody else seem to experience that?

(Of course it doesn't happen a lot and most drivers can't afford to lose 10 seconds in their busy lives)

yep......they're not all bike hating b*stards.....
  • There's quite a few decent drivers around - maybe cos lots of us drive cars too.

The one I appreciate most and experience quite frequenly in urban traffic is when turning right. Look over the shoulder, signal, and as often as not a car following will slow down and wave for me to move over into right hand lane.

(of course I've also done that and had cars that were miles behind accellerate just to stop me pulling accross in front of them, been ignored, beeped at, etc etc etc.....)
  • IMHO drivers are actually getting better...(shock, horror gasp..etc etc)

Most are careful, considerate, lorries hang back until there is a suitable gap and at one point on my commute i turn left into a dual carriageway and have to cross three lanes to turn right 300 yards further on. Luckily the cars are only doing 30-40 mph, almost invariably if i indicate and look behind straight at the driver he will flash or wave me across...

However for every 999 careful drivers it only takes you numpty "SMIDSY" to hurt you!
17 years commuting up and down the King\'s Road and i still don\'t get faster...

Yeah, some of us ride bikes as well! :-)

Mind you I was almost taken out twice today in my car! Once by a lorry that indicated right coming off the M3 to got to heathrow, and then suddenly pulling left across the hatched lines and into my lane, luckily I'd just passed the car I was overtaking and was able to swerve out of this [insert a rude word of your choosing here]s way.

The second was a jerk in a merk who thought he could queue jump the long line of traffic wanting to south down the M3, I came off the M25 and was going north, came round the corner to see this [insert a rude word of your choosing here] who'd accelerated down the empty north filter suddenly brake and point his car into the line of traffic blocking my lane with no warning at all!

So while it was a good day for cyclist it seems the [insert a rude word of your choosing here]s were around J12 of the M25

Do you think there is a forum for [insert a rude word of your choosing here] to decide where they are going to cause havoc?? :)

I'm always quick with the appreciative wave... And I agree, the number of courteous drivers is growing, with the number of riders out there. Melbourne has changed a lot in the last 3 years - the number of cyclists has sky-rocketed!

I see loads of courteous drivers on every commute. They're just not as interesting as the careless/impatient few!

I too see a lot of nice and careful drivers; it makes everyone feel warm and fuzzy inside when they do something nice and get acknowledged. This goes both ways: I will often let other drivers pull out or make a turn and with only very few exceptions, they wave back.
There is one exception to my rule: if the driver is not indicating or -- even worse -- trying to bully me, then I will hold my right of the way.

My exception to the rule is 4x4's, I wouldn't give them the steam of my p1ss (unless I think they are country type folk ie flat scruffy and dirty :))
