Which hand-pump?

I recently bought a Wrench Force hand pump. I couldnt figure it out at first so I took it to my LBS to have a look at. He said its rubbish and that I should take it back to the store I bought it from. It was 14.99 so I expected something decent considering you can pick up floor pumps for 20.

Any recommendations for a pump in that price range that isnt too heavy? As it will be used touring.

  • I recently bought a Cyclaire as my portable pump... It uses a pull cord to inflate tyres with, comes with a pressure guage and easily copes with 120PSI in less than a few minutes. The bag has a sepearate section for storing a spare innertube, tyre lever and a repair kit (probably just room for a multi-tool too).

I hated my Cyclaire so much I put it on ebay after using it once. Noisy, heavy, inefficient, has to go in a bag. I have one of these http://tinyurl.com/2kuaua - £27 but worth it. Fantastic bit of design. 160 psi, no problem. 100 psi in a jiffy with no sweat because you can use your quads instead of your arms. So it even puts the legendary Zefal hpX to shame. Don't believe the review - it comes with a bracket which allows you to fix it to the frame.

There is also a road version http://tinyurl.com/366vg8 which is almost the same but approx 20 grams lighter with a different type of gauge. It's discontinued but you can still get it on ebay.

    Zefal HPX
There are lighter, cleverer, easier to use pumps out there, nothing has the same reputation for reliability. That comes from it being so simple, there’s little to go wrong. Eventually the washers will wear, being such a long established design the parts are available for a couple of quid.
Spa sell them for £15, so a bargain as well.

I agree the Topeak Mountain Morph or Road Morph are excellent - easy to use because they have a flexible tube to go on the valve, and they work like a mini track pump, so easy to achieve high pressures. I also have a Cylaire which is very good too - I can't quite decide which I prefer, but they are both very good for getting up to pressures, whereas many mini pumps just let you inflate enough to get you home.

Another vote for the road morph - can easily get your tyres up to 120 psi.
