A few noob questions. Rear mech upgrade, crank flex, chains.

Hi all,
I have a few beginners questions. I've searched the forum and haven't been able to find anything on these, but apologies if they've been covered before.
1. I have an Acera rear mech (Tyax Elite) and 8 spd cassette. It seems to do the job fine but shifting to higher gears under power is clunky. If I'm pedalling reasonably hard the chain really smacks hard into the higher cog. Is this just expected for a cheap mech, and will upgrading to something like Deore LX improve this?
2. The cheapie Suntour crankset seems to be flexing (I notice the chain rubbing on the front mech), again under power. (If it makes any difference I'm 6 foot about 13 stone) But I've read some comments that say the frame would flex before the crank does. Is this true? If it is the crank would an upgrade fix this?
3. I've seen some cranksets described as 9 speed. WIll these work ok with an 8 speed chain? I'm just wondering because I understand 9 speed chains are thinner.
Sorry to be a bore. Thanks for taking the time to read over and cheers in advance for any replies.

im not sure about number 1.
but number 2 there are a few possibilities. i wouldnt have thought that the frame flexing would cause that to happen. so it could be that the cranks are flexing but it could also be that the chainring you are using is loose. it could also be that the cranks are loose. so just give it all a tigten and see what happens. anothe possibility is that your bottom bracket is worn and needs replacing. to test for this take the chain off all the chainrings and hold both cranks. give them a little wiggle and if they both move together then you need a new bottom bracket
as for number 3 yes you can use a 9 speed crankset with an 8 speed drivechain. but the best bet is if you buy a new crankset is to transefer all of your current chainrings over to the new crankset.
hope this helps!0 -
1) Could be a combo of chain and cassette. Shifts at this price tend to be rather agricultural, try fine tuning.
2+3) Crank arms can flex, you can see it, as can the BB axle and spider. Most chainsets specced are actually 9 speed anyway as 8spd chains work fine on them.
Its a good bike for the money, I'd wear the components out then upgrade.0 -
Cheers for the info guys. Much appreciated!0
