Too much choice, too little brain

 I've reached the limit of my brain power and need advice...it's time to upgrade my Kona Caldera (been great and worth every penny, bruise & cut) and move into full-susser. I've just about settled on a Specialized FSR, even though I loved the Trek 9 and the Britishness of the Orange 5, I've been swayed by public opinion to go for the Specialized BUT my girlfriend (who works for a sailing equipment import company) has just told me she can get Scott bikes at trade prices, so a MC20 is suddenly the same price (£1700) as the Specialized, my only reservation is the Carbon aspect, it appeals yet scares me (rather like committment, but thats a topic for my girlfriend to rant on and not you lot!)...so where do I spend my £ guys?

MBUK just did a review of the Scott, so the review is probably on the website by now, might be worth a look if you havn't seen it already - I think it scored pretty well.

I don't claim to know much about full bouncers, but I would have thought the more you pay, the better a bike you will get, meaning that the Scott would be the best choice?

Scott! The frame will have a replacement waranty anyway, so don't worry about that... Or if you do, get yourself and MC 40 9alu frame) and save yourself some money. Got WMB gold award on a recent test too.

Well it would definately be a choice between the Trek Fuel EX 9 and the Scott MC20, The Trek Is an excepetional handling bike, i have the Ex 8 and absolutely love it. Will have to try the new 2008 Fuel EX range to see how the new evo link handles. The Scott Also looks really nice aswell as having very good spec, If you can test ride both and see which one you feel most comfortable on.

  • Silver Bullet, just spent a few minutes checking out the review, cheers very helpful.
Wolf I've just phoned Scott Uk and the frame warranty is 3yr covering pretty much every eventuality other than global war, so that's put my mind to rest, although the rep I spoke to said the 08 bike (which is out next month) will be hundreds of £'s cheaper but he didn't know why (not carbon me thinks if its £000s cheaper?)
Scubar, you're right about the Trek being a great ride and if Scott has changed the spec I'll be revisiting the shop for a more comprehensive Trek test-ride.

I suppose if the choice wasn't this difficult the we wouldn't all be this addicted! 8)

Scotts carbon frames are very tough- the LBS used to sell Scotts and I bought my MC20 from them. The Scott rep had a piece of the carbon top tube for demo purposes.
The demo was to smash it as hard as he could on the mechanics bench, and then hit it with a hammer. The result of which was- chipped laquer.
But having now sold my MC20 frame, make sure you can test ride one first. It may be just me buit when it got to techy downhill stuff it used to scare me! Always felt like I was going over the bars- not good. I found the top tube too short for my liking and felt cramped for position. But I have a long torso apparently which may of exagerated this.
Replaced with a Trek frame and I'm much happier now.
