Topeak mini pump with smart head

I'm so annoyed right now! I have recently started cycling and have a sirrus. I also got the Topeak mini dual action pump with smart head. It is really fiddly and I don't understand how you are meant to use it (i.e. lever up or down?). Today my cousin came along and tried to pump air into the front tyre. The inner tube valve top piece got stuch right into the pump and as a result the entire tube deflated. This should not have happened - i.e. why did the valve head break off in the first place and why did it go into the pump. Phone the shop which is miles away and they said they will replace the inner tube tomorrow but I am not happy with the pump at all. They said they will only give a refund if it is broken but admitted it was a fiddly pump. I am very annoyed and if they don't give me a refund on the pump I will be inclined to slate the shop on here. Has anyone else had problems with the sirrus tyre valve or the said pump?

It is easy to break presta valves, Topeak have a good reputation, are there no instructions on the box? I would assume that if it is like my Topeak pump (not smart head) you insert the head with lever down, then raise it to lock it on (and lower again to release it). If you did it the other way round then it would be likely to break.

There won't be any issues with the Sirrus valves, it will be a standard presta tube as fitted to many bikes.
  • Thanks, well I will see what they say tomorrow about the pump. I tried what you said several times - insert with lever down, up to lock and down to release but it still doesn't seem to work properly. I wish I hadn't got the one with the smart head. I think it is broken. If the shop are smart they will replace the pump. Hope so....

    It may well be broken
  • Update. This is going to be a bit of a rant, apologies. First they said they would refund the pump. Then they brought another pump and said I could swap it. Then the manager came and said there was nothing wrong with the pump and he wouldn't even exchange it. After a big argument, I insisted I wanted another pump. Because there were bits of rubber broken within the pump valve. Reluctantly, the manager agreed, but all he was bothered about was the fact that he could not resell the pump. Obviously because it is faulty. I reckon they will try to sell it anyway, that's how bad I think this shop are.

What kind of shop is this? The box for this mini-pump has absolutely no instructions on it. The guys in the shop were all arguing with me saying you have to keep it at 90 degrees, you have to be gentle and that the presta valve is easily broken. Fine, but what I don't understand is, Topeak should put warnings like this on the box. All the box had on it was a diagram of the pump, no instructions Also, how could they recommend this pump to me in the first place if it is so hard to use?!! He said that it is patronising for Topeak to put instruction on the box. No mate, if you are knew to cycling, the instructions should be on there. I will never be convinced that this is a good pump.

What a crap shop. I thought they were crap from the start but they knew I needed the bike. They didn't even show me how to release the wheel, and they didn't even give me a discount. The manager is obviously only interested in money, as he proved when he wouldn't even replace a dodgy pump which is obviously not the best pump. Even if they are right in their opinion, they should not stand there and shout at someone who is new to cycling and who has just spent a lot of money on a bike from their shop. I really regret buying from this shop, and do not recommend them to anyone as they are rude. However I do thank the boy who changed my inner tube.

If anyone from Leisure Lakes in Wolverhampton is reading this - three words for you to learn boys: 'GOOD CUSTOMER RELATIONS'.

I reckon you already had a returned pump that they resold, I'm pretty sure Topeak pumps would come ith an instruction leaflet. The shop sounds awful! They could have got themselves a regular customer with good customer care! They don't know how to run a business!!!
  • Thanks alfablue. Maybe I did....I am quite upset. I am supposed to a two free services with them too, but I just don't trust them now. I should have travelled to a Specialized dealer further out as I can't see myself going back to this shop. Yes, they have lost business as my dad and brother want to buy Specialized bikes this year too. I also have a mate from London who has just moved up here and wants cycle gear. Initially I might have recommended this shop but now I won't bother. I did in fact tell them what I thought of them but I don't think the manager cared.

This pump definitely has no instructions in or on the box....if the shop want to improve themselves they should report this incident to Topeak and inform them that beginners need instructions and warnings even if it is a pump.

Can you suggest what pump is good for presta valve which doesn't break it?

Pumps that have a hose are much better in terms of not stressing the valve. I have a Topeak Road Morph and a Cyclaire - both are brilliant and have hoses.
  • Thanks, I will bear this in mind but I can't afford to get a different pump at the moment.......phew what a day
