I bought my Gitane with VP VPR70 pedals. Basically I've never got comfortable with being clipped in, specially in traffic, and I've had a few embarrassing slow motion topples. Now having had a knee operation I find the twisting motion needed to get out of the b*ggers just too painful, so I'm going to revert to flats with straps/cages. Looking round the bike shops though, flat pedals seem to be geared to mountain bikes. Can anyone recommend a pedal that suits road bikes and takes toe clips?

Wellgo do the type of pedals you're after. They're your standard multipurpose pedal - not chunky wide mtb/bmx pedals - with either a plastic or alloy body and a metal cage and will take toe clips. These are the pedals that came with my road bike as standard. Should be able to pick them up from wiggle, etc.

  • thanks for the advice everyone. I've ordered a pair of those MKS GR9s, and some toeclips. Looking forward to a more consistently vertical style of riding (still have painful memory of slowly keeling over while clipped in and landing right at a policeman's feet).

i was going to offer you my old pedals with clips for just the cost of postage as i have absolutely no use for them. But you seem sorted, let me know if the situation changes
  • wahey, they're great - I can actually use the thing in traffic again now! no more pulling away from junctions with one foot attached and one frantically trying to cleat itself back in... :D

I also felt inspired to change the pedals on my MTB - got the DMR V8s, which again are a revelation - so much more grippy than the worn down platforms it came with
  • I'm sure that ebay would turn up a set of shimano strapped road pedals.

I also use straps. I've read too many horror stories on this forum to go for cleats. However I occasionly have problems getting the pedals to turn over so that I can get my foot in them. I tend to tread on the toe clip as I turn the pedal with my foot. All this makes my accelarating away from traffic lights only to almost stop not look quite as cool as it should. I'm sure it's just practice but has anyone got any tips?
