Internet Explorer should have its own pop up blocker within it. Well version 7 does anyhoo, its in the tools menu, check its turned on.

If not, download Firefox, the thinking nerds web-browser.

No pop-ups here, whats better you can download an extension that kills on site ads dead too.

Also download Lavasoft adaware and Spyboy search and destroy, both free, AVG free wouldn't go a miss either as you clearly have adware on your pc.

    Good advice,

I wouldn't put Ad-aware and Spybot on together though to be fair, you can get some wicked conflicts, not to mention the fact they'll usually label each other as spyware.

    Ad-Aware is here http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

    Spybot is here http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.htm

This page has a donate box, you don't have to, the product is free, but if it works for you, might be nice to think about it.

AVG is a good free Anti Virus program, available from here http://free.grisoft.com/

However remember the best anti malware system is only as good as

    A) Keeping it updated on a regular basis.

    B) The person using it. Be careful out there!

  • Get Firefox and that should stop most of the ads that popup in a new window.

Then get an extension for firefox called Adblock Plus and that can block all those flashing adds on webpages that tell you that you have just won a laptop, ipod etc.

Adaware is next to useless in all honesty, and Lavasoft have been caught numerous times removing detctions for certain malware from their databases due to being paid off by the companies producing the malware (google it as it is well known within the IT industry). Lavasoft have also moved into the bloatware market making the later versions of Adaware slow and cumbersome in use.

Spyware Terminator is probably the closest to an all-in-one solution at this present time, but as of this time there is not one anti-malware product on the market to do every job.

Unless you use POP3 based mail via Outlook or Outlook Express (or other email client), then there is honestly no need to run any Anti Virus software at all on your systems if you use a good combination of anti-malware tools.

Windows Defender, Spybot S&D, Spyware Terminator & SpywareBlaster are the only tools you need and if kept updated, your system will be kept free of malware. Another application also worth having installed is CCleaner to clean out the junk before any scans are made, and also to clean up the registry safely & effectively after a removal of a rogue application.

Grisoft AVG also misses a lot more than it actually detects. Yes it is better than nothing at all if you use POP3 mail, but there are plenty of more effective and less resource intensive AV software out there, such as NOD32 for one such example.

Anti Malware scans should also be run in Safe Mode for proper detection and removal of any rogue applications.

Firefox is becoming bloatware too quickly and the advent of more & more security flaws being detected within it, it is very close to catching up to Internet Explorer! In all honesty if you are looking for an alternative browser, then try Opera. Quicker and more effective than Firefox all round, with much better page rendering than other non-IE based browsers.
