What bike for riding street?

Could anyone advise me on what would be a good bike to get for riding street on? First time I've lived in a city and so my riding style has changed.
Am looking at spending around £300, probably on something rigid, I don't have too much preference over whether it is 24 or 26 inch, although I have no experience of riding 24 inch. Also, I would be interested in any second hand bikes that anyone knows of. Thanks.
