More versatile tires on 700c road wheels

Have a Specialized Sirrus with 700*28c armadillo slicks. Perfect for fast road commute but not so great for planned weekend rides that will take me onto tracks and rougher but not MTB terrain. So question is, whats the fattest treaded tire I could put on?

Any recommendations?

Also, I guess I won't encounter anything thats any worse than crashing over badly surfaced roads at 20mph so no issues with frame/wheels not being up to slightly rougher terrain - ?

Thoughts?

I'm only a little un (65kg) so I guess that will help.

sounds like you need cyclocross tyres, which are usually 32mm

or perhaps some burlier touring tyres. Depends how much grip you want offroad and how fast onroad

I have ridden offroad with Kenda Eurotreks, Schwalbe Marathons and Schwalbe Land Cruiser tyres. The Land Cruiser is a semi-slick, the others have a road tread. I though that the Land Cruiser was marginally better off road, but I still managed to cross the alps with the Kenda tyres on my Dawes Kalahari. [Everyone else had mtbs]
