Sticky Shimano rapid fire shifters

Hi,

I know whats causing the problem, but before I hack bits off my new shifters I thought I'd put it to the floor to see if anyone else had and suggestions.

Old bike (see sig) new simano rapid fire (the original STIs gave up, and who could blame them) so I now have rapid fire shifters similar to these - Couldn't find the 7 speed versionson the website

I'd been having problems with the up change lever not returning (springing) back...so being the mechanical genius I am, I started at the deraileur end (it's the oldest bit, so it had to be that) and worked my way back, lubing and greasing as I went...yep it's the shifter!! :?

Sprayed a bit of lube in there, no joy, it's only got 2 screws on it and thanks to the Shimano PDF here I thought I'd remove the bottom cover (4 in the diagram)

Ping! the lever shot back, if I leave it loose (or off) the lever returns as sweet as it should do. But do the screw up and it's sticky...obviously I don't want to leave it loose and loose the cover.

The levers have only the been on the bike a few months so I don't really want to hack bits off them, but it's tempting :D and to be honest I'd rather find out why this has happened first.

The only other idea I came up with was a small washer between the cover and the lever to stop the cover rubbing on the rest of the housing.

Or do I just return it to my LBS and get them to sort it, as they fitted them?

Many thanks for any suggestions
