Building up a new bike..........

Got a Saracen Scarab from Halfords last week, but the rear wheel has no disc mount, so I am stuck for the time being with the crappy V-brake.

Need a good wheelset for extreme trail riding, preferably double-walled, and a good rear hydraulic disc brake, but on a tight budget.

Any ideas? Ta folks

How tight's tight? Theres endless options these days, pre-built things or custom jobbies, and what do you reckon is more important - a tough wheel or a good brake? That'll sort out the price balance for each.

Tight as in won't able to afford anything until payday. Am seriously considering a set of Halo Combats from Billys in Cambridge, but my rear disc is a bit of a grey area.

thats xc get the juicy 3 its last years juicy 5 i think and £10 cheaper. for wheels depending on budget, the new mbuk has a wheeltest in it. i would go the the sas though, purely because i have a rear one and do DH on it and its indestructible, even though it is a bit heavy.

Another option is simply to change the EX-3 wheel to disc ready, so long as I can fit a 6 bolt rotor. Anyone heard of these rims?

This is already a very tough wheelset, albeit heavy. If you want to maximise its performance, get a new fork and shock.

Ok, have swapped the saddle for for my DMR, and the bars/stem for the DMR Wingbar/Coalition stem that I took off my GT. One solution to my brake/wheel problem is to swap my 120mm travel fork for my 100mm Marzzocchi Bomber, which has rim brake mounts, and fit a set of Magura hydraulic rim brakes. These are predominately XC/trials, but have never let me down.

Also the wheelset I could swap for my Jalco DDZ double walls, which are lighter than the EX-3s........ but which of course also don't have disc hubs.........

What is wrong with your current wheelset?

Nowt, really, just that the Jalcos are lighter.
