Cyclaire - lots of sweat, not much puff

Well, thought I'd try one of these just to see if they do what they suggest they do on the packet. Mmmm, seems like one for the masochists to me. I got the Rapid because I need something to pump up to 120psi, but it looks as if it would take all day to get up to that pressure, and you need an 'A' level in pulling the starter cord on an outboard to keep going with what is a very labour-intensive pumping action.

My Cyclaire has already started gathering dust. Shame, as I was hoping to cart around something smaller than a track pump for when I do the odd Dr Bike session.

Cheers, Jon.

  • I've had a Cycleaire for a couple of years now and fortunately haven't had to use it too much, but I've perfected the technique now! Rather than pull the cord to it's fullest extent I do shorter, faster pulls which I find isn't as tiring! It takes a good couple of minutes to get the pressure up over the 100 though.t

I think the Rapid is only good for 80psi (designed for MTB's), the regular or plus are for road tyres and do 120psi. I find it is not too strenuous to use.

My husband has the standard one and I find it much easier than our track pump to get up to 120psi.
  • I buy very good tyres, and seem to be getting punctures at the rate of one a year, so sold my cycleaire and bought CO2 cartidges instead.

The cartridges can be recycled once spent, and a box of six has lasted me a year so far.

is it one cartridges per inflate of can you use them to top-up a partially inflated tyre?

also, do you have any recommendations

I have a "regular" Cyclaire. It is sh1te. My Topeak Master Blaster is better. My Joe Blow track pump is much better.

Do not buy a Cyclaire - they are rubbish. I only bought mine because it got 9 out of 10 in Cycling Plus, but the reviews in that magazine are seriously dodgy - as I have found out on three separate occasions now.

They are not rubbish in my view, I get on with it very well, it is as good as my Topeak Road Morph, just in a different way. The regular is probably better for road tyres (lower volume means high pressure comes up quite quick), the Cyclaire Plus is quicker, the Rapid is quicker but for MTB lower pressures.

Some people love 'em, some hate 'em, I think technique may be some of the issue.
