105 Front Derailleur

I've got a 105 triple, it's this years and has done about 300-400 miles so far. I've noticed fairly recently a repetitive clicking sound coming from the front derailleur area when I'm using the largest front sprocket and smallest at the back.

I also found that sometimes when shifting onto the largest front sprocket the chain would jam, I'd just relax the pressure on the pedals and it'd fix itself. But it's very annoying!

I tried to tighten up the wire feeding into the front derailleur but I can't seem to get rid of the clicking unless I hold the sti lever in the shifting position. I went so far that it refused to shift onto the smallest front sprocket, and the chain would jump off the top sprocket.

I also found that when using the largest front sprocket pushing the pedals in the reverse direction is quite difficult and sounds like metal's grinding metal somewhere.

The only change I've made fairly recently is cleaning my chain and applying a ceramic lubricant. Thinking about it, it really hasn't felt as smooth since.

Hope that all makes sense! Has anyone got any advice? Or should I make a visit to a mechanic?

  • road triples can be a pain. If you don't have much experience, take it to a good shop and get it set up correctly.
