If you have an old chain and a pair of vice grips you can wrap the chain around the cassette and pinch the two ends together using the vice grips. That's always been enough to get mine off!

I use an old oil filter tool. Anything will do though aslong as it holts the chain in place while you undo the lockring.

I used an old chain and brake lever blade for occasional home use. Split the chain, and rejoin through the lever pivot, then use a ring spanner for leverage to hold it in position in use. It's small and easy to carry in your bag on rides too. ( For spoke replacement etc.)
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

    Here you go...

Piece of 1/8" x 1" steel and an old chain. Use the chain's rivets to attach to the steel.

I use a cloth oil filter grip. Works sweet

    Or for a mere five quid, buy one here - http://www.tartybikes.co.uk/product.php?id=140 or here - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=10184

Not worth the hassle of making one for that price, never realised they were so cheap.

I use an old chain and a pair of mole grips. Get an extra pair of arms to help you for increased leverage.

I just got my old chain, stuck a big nail through one end for grip and got someone to hold onto it. Simple (and free :D), but a two person job.
