Can I fit forks with a 1" steerer to a 1&1/8"

Bit of an odd question, but I'm building up a commuter bike on the cheap and have got the perfect frame for it, which is for a 1 & 1/8" headset. However I've also got some old forks I could use with a 1" steerer - can I match the two using a shim of some sort on the steerer?? Much like you do with a stem?? And if so, is such a thing available??

If not, I'll have to buy some new forks - but if I can keep it cheap by using stuff I've already got, then so much the better!!

I know you can shim down 1 1/2 inch down to 1 1/8 but 1 1/8 down to 1 I'm not sure of.

Check on ebay - there are loads of cheap mtb forks. Probably as cheap as getting hold of a set of shims... stonger setup too.

I can't think of any technical reason why you couldn't so long as you can source a properly made shim. I don't think you would get away with a piece of coke can for instance.

I went the other way and fitted some 1" 1/8 forks onto an old 1" Giant OCR. I had to source a special headset from Giant.
Probably doesn't help you much but maybe there is a special headset out there which will do the job :?
  • yes, you can get headset reducers for most sizes. I had some 1 1/8" to 1" ones not long ago. I know Pedal Power at Martlesham, Ipswich had some
