Which way to Pakistan?

Just a little light thinking about our possible route next spring... which way would you go?
We will be in the Middle East for the winter, returning to Turkey in the early spring, and then we want to go east. As we see it, we have the choice of:
1. Going through Georgia and Azerbajan, across the sea to Turkmenistan and various other `stans into Pakistan. (a route partially used by http://www.14degrees.org)
2. Through Iran and into Pakistan, possibly needing to use a bus for part of Pakistan as independent cycling is not allowed
Which one would you do? Both are appealling to us....

Definitely Turkey - Iran -Turkmenistan - Uzbekistan - Tajikistan - Kyrgyzstan - China(Kashgar) - Pakistan.
That way you get to do two really classic mountain routes, the Pamir Highway and Karakoram Highway. See the Tours link below for a couple of accounts.0
