Which wheelset?

I ride a 2006 marin eldridge grade and looking to upgrade my wheelset. i am fairly heavy at 14.5 stone and ride XC

any suggestions as i'm not very clued up in this area!

also, would just buying a decent set of tyres make the ride any faster?

For XC you would be looking at the Hope Pro2 on 717 rims, or DT4.2d rims from Merlin. Personally I would go for the new XTR hubs for a little more, as they are stronger, lighter and more durable.

what about the tyre question also?

will i notice a decent difference if i made the upgrade as well? this is my first proper bike so have never done any upgrades in the past

Most stock tyres are pretty guff, so an upgrade here will be beneficial, say Cinders or Conti Speedking with kevlar beads.

i take it that the kevlar bead is the 'folding' option?
