I was listening to Forth One (Edinburgh radio) this morning and the local disc jockey was commenting on cyclists daring to using the road to cycle on.......let me explain....

There is a place in Edinburgh called Arthur's seat, it s huge big hill will a road round it. Lovely for training in whether its cycling or running. It has a cycle path in the park as well but sometimes cyclists also use the road. (shock horror!)

The DJ was moaning about cyclists cycling down the road when there was a "perfectly good cycle path". He also commmented on one cyclist who got off his bike and moved over the the cycle path and applauded him. Unbelievable. All of this is because it probably meant he had to drive behind a cyclist for a nano-second and he some how felt his car journey was slowed. Again let me use the word: unbelievable!

However I can only blame myself for listening to Forth one! I won't be making that mistake again.

I must admit that if there's a perfectly good cycle path I'll use it. But normally the paths are too short to be worth bothering with, not suitable for higher speeds, or cars drive on them anyway.

As one of those cyclists who daring to using the road in Holyrood Park (occasional) I would like to make the following comments. The cycle path referred to is along the north west part of Queens Drive and isn’t good especially if you want to turn right at the roundabout and continue along Queens Drive (most cars go left into Dukes Walk) around Arthur’s Seat. As the section between Holyrood Park Road and Dukes Walk is mostly down hill, I am generally travelling fast, sometime above 30mph which is the speed limit for motor vehicles on this road (bicycles are not covered by the speed limits in the Road Traffic Act), I am not holding them up. While cycling there I have experienced hassle from motorist who think I should be cycling on the pavement, the usual sort of thing hooting the horn, shouting etc., but I just ignore it.

I should point out that once beyond Dukes Walk the road goes steeply up hill and I don’t do anything like 30mph, yet on this bit I get no hassle from drivers.

Nothing better than belting down queen's drive on a sunday when the road is closed and taking the racing line round the corner!!

Thankfully due to the CTC we dont need to use cycle lanes where provided. That cycle lane is well narrow and often full of peds. You'd need to go down the hill pretty slow.

Just a thought, maybe the next Critical Mass could be persuaded to take a wee turn along Queens Drive then round the Parliament, just to make the point...

Yes. And don't do it again.

No it wasn't Bogie but Grant Stott. (Named and shamed)

It would be good to see critical mass taking a wee spin up and down queens drive, I would be up for that!
