I have just gathered all the materials for my project.

List so far:

3 x 28 to 25 mm copper 'fitting reducers' (these are the light bodies.)
3 X brass compression discs (heatsinks with thermal contact to copper bodies)
1 x 1000ma buckpuck constant current device to drive LED's
3 x Seoul SSC p4 u bin 240lm LED's.
3 x Fraen narrow beam 10deg optics.
1 water proof switch.
2 x 7.4v LiPo batterys (4000mah)

The optics fit perfectly in the copper reducers, and amazingly the brass heatsinks are snug fit on the elbow of the reduced diameter, at the perfect height for the led to sit.

Give me a couple of weeks and i will have constructed it (I need to make a visit to dads workshop to drill the fittings.

The LED's will be wired in series, controlled by a 5k pot

  • Good luck - looks great - let us know how it goes
  • This looks great! Good find with the copper reducers - a housing seems to be the most difficult bit.

I have had problems with those waterproof switches in the past - I find that the rubber cover causes the switch to turn itself off on its own over bumps etc. I have given up on them for now and am looking for a replacement.

How are you going to mount the lights?

do you have a CT diag etc for wiring this up ?? Instructions etc ?

I dont have a wiring diagram, but its stupidly simple, the leds are series, with the first input +ve and last -ve to the Buckpuck. Then inputs to the battery, simple as really.

Almost got all the bits, then the building starts...
  • Is that a plant pot in the photo?

I take it these items are readily available from maplin ? copper reducers excepted

First update: Attaching leds to heatsinks. I meade my own thermal epoxy using heat resistant glue and thermal compound.

About to embark on a home made luxeon led bike light myself, so I'll be watching this thread carefully as this one looks like it could be a great light.

Can't wait to see these lights in action.
I'm champing at the bit to get my soldering iron warmed up!

I've already got some 8 x AA nimh battery packs that I made up for a previous light project, will these be suitable to run your lighting system?

yes they would work. I bout some cheapo lithium batterys, they should give many hours of run time.

I just fired the lights up for the first time. I think i have damged my sight, or my monitor has big bright blobs all over it!

I can see why you picked that design, its about the best looking ive seen, and I`m going to give it a bash as well. RS stock CREE LEDs abd optics they same kinda ouput as the ones your using ?

one thing . . . can you tell me how tall the seoul LEDS + lens is? just so i can work out the heights i need for housings?

    many thanks,

    Nice work, they look great.

Best i get started on mine.

Will you be providing anymore insight into the construction of the lights and links to where the components came from :D

Cheaky i know, but if you don't ask you don't get!!

    Cheers

another question is cost, I`ve been adding up what i would need and the battery and charger alone are gonna be coming in at least £70 ? Just wonder if its better buying a ready made job.

charger: esky balance charger - about 8 quid. PSU 10. batteries - 2X 3:10 for some 7.4 volts lipo 3000mah. so about 25 all in for power.

    leds go here: http://www.dotlight.de/shop/index.php/cPath/296_292

8 euros a piece, then 3 euros for the optics. x3 = 33 euros so about 20 quid.

then all the bits and bobs will come to about 25ish.

I take it you have the batteries wired in series ?

yes - you need at least the combined forward voltage drop of the leds (about 3.7v) plus a an extra 2v for the buckpuck.
