I am at the planning stage of LEJOG due to take place in June 2008. At the moment, I have settled on the CTC route LE-St Austell-Exeter-Bristol-Hereford-Wigan,Penrith,etc. I am hoping to camp and use B&Bs in emergency. If anyone has done this route, I would appreciate any advice you can give me. If anyone has a better route (I struggle on hills), I would also be interested.

Pekka, sorry to hijack this thread but could you possibly link to that CTC route? I may be in the pre-planning stage...
Wanted: Penny farthing. Please PM me!
Advice for kilted riders: top-tubes are cold.

One of the sites to use for planning

    http://www.users.waitrose.com/~ianclare/links.htm

Loads of tales from people who have done it, and lots of different routes to look at

If you are a member of CTC

    http://www.ctc-maps.org.uk/routes/route/1024/map
You have to login to see and download it

If you can get your hands on a Phillips UK large scale motorists' road atlas, it has the approx locations of camp sites marked on it. I'm afraid it's next to impossible to avoid the hills of Devon and Cornwall but once you are clear of those two counties the rest of the ride is a breeze.

The map along with others of CTC routes merely mark the beginning and end of the ride and join them with a straight line. This is laziness on a grand scall especially when the routes in many cases are quite detailed.

I'm sure the CTC can get its hands on a work experience pupil for a few weeks to get their Googlemaps mash ups to accurately reflect the routes that they purport to show.

Thanks for the ínformation. It isn't the hills so much as the A9 through Warrington and Wigan.

Look on the sister site Bikely
    http://www.bikeradar.com/routes/?srchke ... =listpaths
for a possible route, but I would prefer Cheddar Gorge and other variations here and there

Warrington and Wigan and my home town are shown here:-

    It's a direct route on the A49 and A6.

I am sure there are others out there on the web

The CTC info pack includes an alternative route through Cornwall and Devon using the hostels at Treyarnon Bay and Okehampton. The saving in climbing is around 40% so flatter but definitely not flat. A suggestion of mine, but certainly not original. The complete route is available on the CTC website but falls into the scenic ie hilly category.
