Low pressure rear shocks?

I'm currently using a Specialized Enduro 01 with long travel kit on, taking the travel up to 5" or theoretically 6". The shock that comes with the bike is a 165mm, 1.5" stroke shock and I weigh about 200lb (6' 6" tall)
Sadly the combined leverage caused by 5" travel on the 1.5" shock is ramping the required pressure right up, my Fox Float R is currently sitting at about 280 PSI and I don't really dare do drops on it at that. The Mojo spring calculator suggested a 1070 spring (which doesn't exist at that size), the rebound damping now seems none existant so it's bouncing along a lot which I'm also assuming is the pressure. I'm just wondering if a low pressure rear shock such as a Rockshox Ario/MC or the DT Swiss shocks would serve me better?
Given the BETD link I used is fairly common I wondered how people all got on with this I'd really rather stick to air shocks if possible.

5" of travel through a 1.5" stroke?! So a 1:3.3 stroke ratio...
If I were in your shoes, I would be thinking about picking up a new frame. That ratio is always going to feel bad, whatever kind of shock you run. You could probably pick up an 05/06 Stumpy FSR for about the price of a new air can anyway.0 -
The odd thing is, it used to run 4.6" without the BETD link on the 1.5" stroke shock , meaning the normal ratio was over 1:3 anyway.
Yeah, I did consider the second hand frame upgrade, it's got some 07 Revelation Dual Airs on already and some decent new wheels.
Edit: Come to think of it, all the old stumpies only used to have short travel and have a BETD link option, I'd assume all must go up to a crazy ratio. From the MTBR reviews I think a lot swap to springs but I'd rather stay air for the weight. Which is why I was pondering RS lower pressure cans, I can pick up a second hand one for £50 or so I'd imagine and get away with running 200 psi or so I think.0 -
Does anyone know if Fox Float chamber size has increased since 2000-2002ish? I'm wondering if the crazy pressure is due to the shock being very small capacity.
I vaguely saw mention on one site.0 -
Fox make high volume air sleeves, but I'm not sure they'll have one for older Float R models.
Ring Mojo on 01633615815, and ask the lads there if it's possible to getone for your shock. It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.0
