There is a Giant trance 3 in my local bike shop for 799 Quid. I am looking to upgrade my old Knacker of a Marin and this seems to fit the bill. Feels good ...any feedback from owners?

  • If its an 07 Trance you wont be disappointed. The 3 carries some extra weight as its a lower spec model. The wheels are the main culprit. The frame is the same through the range and its a corker-prime for upgrades later on.

I got a 2006 Trance 3 last year. The frame/rear suspension is great and therefore you should buy it. Be prepared to upgrade soon though. The Manitou Splice forks that came with mine went straight away and were replaced by the far superior (but relatively cheap) RS Pikes. I sold the Manitous (unused) on E-bay and got a reasonable price for them. I also had a few problems with the chain getting caught up, and crushed, in the rear suspension. I wanted to fit a chain guide/device anyway and this solved the problem. The wheels are OK although I bust a couple of spokes on the rear. I'll upgrade when they need replacing. I also changed the handlebars - I found the low rise bars an odd choice. I went for full on risers. Brakes are only OK - I had a spare pair of Maguras (my favourite) which I fitted. Then again I visit the Lakes once a week and I'm not a natural downhiller - I need good brakes! If the bike still has the terrible Manitous like mine did, I'd replace them straight away - I'd leave the rest and see how you get on with the bike. If you are willing to upgrade at some point 'd go for it - it's a great price.

  • Does anyone know when the Giants will start to be discounted and what kind of price i could get a Trance 2 for?

Before too long I think. Try all terrain cycles in yorkshire, dales cycles in scotland and winstanleys cycles. They all offered discounts on line last year when I was looking. I'd settle for about 35% off the list price but you may get even more.

2006/7 models are on discount in my LBS. I bought a Trance 4 last year - frame is the same as rest of the range but the components are cheap and heavy. So I stripped it back to the bare frame and built up with RC41s, mono minis, XT etc. Must have shaved about 5lbs off the weight. So I would say that if your budget doesn't stretch very far, buy a cheaper model and upgrade as the components wear out.
  • Buddy, theres a dealer near you with a Trance 2 in stock!!!
