I bought a new frame on ebay and need to fit a Bottom bracket but not sure what type of thread to get - the frame is made in italy (from a stamp on the bottom) and was told that it was made in the Fondriest factory (but it was ebay!) . Anyway the question is : is there any way of telling the type of BB it requires (I know the legth but thats all. I know a lbs could tell me but there isnt a decent one local to me and I'm trying to do this on the cheap so would prefer to buy online - if only i knew what to get...

Measure the width of the BB shell, outside to outside. If it's 68mm then it is English, if it is 70mm then it is Italian. You'll need to measure carefully as either could vary by +/-0.5mm.

Next thing to do is check threads. On Italian BBs both cup threads are RH. On English the RH cup is LH thread.

Next is diameter but not easy to measure unless you have some decent measuring kit.
  • thanks for the info - I'll get the ruler out!

I happen to know that if you bought a BB from www.dotbike.com and it turned out to be the wrong one, they will exchange it, no quibble, no fuss, no argument. :)
  • cheers Proto thats good to know :D
