Seat Clamp Sizes... am I being stupid?

I've got a seatpost that I know is 27.2 in diameter... but how big should my clamp be... obviously bigger than that but does it follow a principle that if the post is 27.2 is the clamp generally a specific size ie. 31.8?

That's the nub of my question... am I looking at a 31.8 size seat clamp if the post is 27.2?

Usually it would be that size yes. But only one way to make sure and that is to measure it.

  • What's the bike? Someone probably knows what size seat clamp it takes. There's only a finite number of options.

You need to measure the seat tube under where the clamp sits, unless someone can tell you for sure the size required. (Your LBS?) For example, my two Konas both have 27.2 seatposts, but the Cinder Cone takes a 31.8mm clamp, and the King Kikapu uses a 30.0mm.

The Orange will be 31.8mm. The King Kikapu has Scandium tubesets which are stronger, and are made thinner to reduce weight.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
