What bike would everyone reccomend 1 week tour of Italy?

I currently ride an MTB, would a road bike with racks be more suited?

Any reccomendations welcome!

  • Hi,

It really depends on - which part of Italy you are traveling around - the types of road you will be using - the load you will be carrying - the distances you hope to carry - and what else you hope to do.

I've done two week long trips in Tuscany and 30% of my routes were on Strade Bianche - or 'white roads'. These are noramlly surfaced in crushed rock and don't have a tarmac surface. I was also interested in exploring out of the way places and taking photos. See http://www.lkjh.biz/bike/tuscany/south/ ... index.html

For this type of riding I would certainly recommend an MTB or robust touring bike.

If you are interested in covering longer distances on better quality roads - a touring bike might be more suitable.
