I want to respray my old frame myself, any tips on preparation on the frame and spray paint to use?
Can't bear the 6-8week wait by doing it professionaly.
Not doing anything flash, just straight black to cover the flaking paint.
Cheers

I once had a go at respraying - took weeks, and wasn't overly satisfied with the end result due to the difficulty in evenly spraying where the tubes join - especially on the inside of the headset, and bb inside the triangle.
Ensure you choose a really dry day - you'd be amazed at the beading you'll get on normal days.
Use a powerful heater to heat the room up nicely first... <Enjoy that carbon footprint!>
I found I had to get used to spraying from a reasonable distance - the temptation was to spray too close.
If you're commuting to a high-theft zone, and your frame is not steel, perhaps just wrap some old inner-tube, or helicopter tape round the frame instead!
Not sure on paint - Try a car body shop / pain specialist for some ideas.
I used spraycans of regular car paint.0 -
Give Mosquito bikes a call. They're knowledgable on the subject and if you can strip your bike down yourself, it could be done relatively quick.0

Don't
By the time you have paid for the raw materials (stripper, scrappers, cleaners, primers, undercoat, topcoat, space & time) you might as well get a low cost spray job, although it is quite rewarding in it's own way.
Oh, and it doesn't last.0 -
I would have thought that a bit of sandblasting, then some powder coating would work a treat. I had a friend who had this done to his motorbike frame and tank, and it looked great, and it lasted!!0

another vote for blasting and powedercoating, the frame i had done took 2 weeks and came back looking fantastic, had a choice of 100 or so colours and it was only £40, would do it again although the next one won't be matt black but one of the slightly more expensive candy colours.

£40 - is that all it costs for a respray?0

I too have frame in need of much TLC - anyone know who can do a sandblast and respray in or around Cardiff ???? Thanks.0

not a respray but a blast and then a hardwearing powdercoat and yes it was £40 and they did a lovely job, cost me a little extra to get the threads in the bottom bracket cleaned by the lbs but still very cheap (about 15 quid i think), i found them in the yellow pages, was the first one that automatically knew what i was talking about

Ooh, this all feels a bit weird. I miss the C+ forum.
Anyway, on the same theme as the above, I'm hoping to get a respray done but I'm a bit of a dumbass and don't know anything. So:
Is it easy getting a respray on an aluminium frame? I've heard you can't sandblast them so does it make it complicated getting the existing paint off? And is there anyone in London who's had this done at a London place without any trouble? Does it affect price?
Also (this is going to make me look really dumb): I'd like, if possible, to have a couple of decals on it. How would that work? Presumably they spray it one colour, I provide the decals and they put them on and lacquer over them?
I know I should probably just call Vaz or someone and ask, but I feel less stupid on the internet than over the phone. Please help!<hr noshade size="1">

I read resprayers shotblast frames to remove the existing paint. I don't know if this could be done with Al. However it sounds almost the same as sandblasting but I expect shot is a larger grain than sand.
What is powdercoating and how good is it compared to a respray?0 -
I've had a few frame and forks sandblasted and powder coated for £25 all in.
Not as nice as an enamel finish, but definitely better than a tatty old bike, and is really hardwearing.
Turn around was 2 weeks. I'll never respray my own bike again.0 -
Powdercoat is £15 in Digbeth. Well recommended.0
