Disc Brakes - Advice

Hello,
I am new to this site and have a question regarding Disc Brakes.
I have been Mountain biking for about 7 years now and try to get all over the country trying different rides. I live in Sheffield and have easy access to the Peak District from my front door.
Anyway, to the point, I bought a Marin Palisades Trail in 2002 (2001 model) which I have gradually done up over the years so now all that is left is the frame and the headset. I have upgraded absolutely everything else and it is now a pretty decent bike. I put Shimano XT V-brakes on it, which are fairly decent, but I want disc brakes as I have noticed a huge difference when I have tried out my mates bikes which have them.
I can fit discs on the front, However the model of bike I have does not have a mount for disc brakes on the rear so I cannot buy the brakes and fit them. I have been told it is possible to weld a mount onto the frame. I have a couple of questions regarding this.
1. Is this feasible?
2. Is it a good idea?
3. Where would I get it done?
4. What sort of money would it cost?
I am planning on buying a full suspension bike in the next couple of years but I will be keeping the current bike because I want a hardtail as well.
I only have very basic knowledge when it comes anything other than riding my bike so any help would be appreciated!!

I cant answer your questions but it might also be worth looking into disk mount adaptors for non-disk frames.
A2Z and BETD are just two companies who make them, although I dont know how good they are.
Keep in mind you'll also need disk compatible hubs.Current:

Thanks for that.
I have a compatable hub on the front but not the back so would need to sort the rear wheel.
At the minute I am just trying to get an idea of whether it is worth the time and money.0 -
have u considered using a disc on the front and leaving the V on the back?
You should be using the front brake more than the back anyway0 -
I have thought about that but I think it would upset the balance of my bike.0

By balance, do you mean the look or the feel?
After years of using V's I bought a Fury with hydraulic discs (about month ago) and now find I hardly ever use the rear. The power & control from the front is MORE than enough to stop in most sittuations.
If it's the look your worried about, yeah, I s'pose, it would look a bit odd wiv disc up front and V out back. :oops:0 -
I mean the feel. I may be wrong I just imagine it would take a lot of getting used to.0

I'm running a disk up front and V out back with no worries, as other people have said, the fron takes the work and the back usually just relaxes. Works fine for me and i can stop on a penny0

Thanks for your response, its certainly a possibility then.0
