Crank Problems

I'm quite new to mountain biking. Ive had a Kona Cindercone for the past 12 months. All has been fine until my last few rides. My crank started to click, a little a first. It's now making some horrible grinding sounds. The pedal arms (not sure exactly what there called) have a slight wobble to them. Anyone any idea what this could be?

Also is there any good websites with maintenance tips, how to change parts etc etc.

Hope someone out there can help.

Cheers

  • I should think that is because your cranks (pedal arms as u called them) are loose.
I had exactly the same problem with mine on my bike.

Make sure your crank arms are both tight, use a torque wrench set at 45Nm, if after that there is still movement then your bottom brcket will either be loose or knackered and will need replacing. If in doubt take it to your LBS and hve them check it for you.
  • I don't like the horrible grinding sounds bit, they don't usually make that sot of noise if they are just loose. I suspect that you have duff bearings and they have worn out, introducing play into your cranks.

Quick trip to LBS, I think.

For maintenance tips, none better than Park Tools http://www.parktool.com/ Click on Repair Help and use the Bike Map to zero in on the problem area.
