I really think it is time for a new r. mech. Mine is starting to loose tension, the chain seems to be rattling around quite a bit.

Are there any quick fixes ie new springs?? As the mech does still shift well.

The mech is 2 years old.

My main question is which mech to go for. I currently have an lx r. mech that was fitted on my 2005 rockhopper. When buying a new rear mech should i buy Lx again or go for XT??

SRAM is out of the question as i have Shimano Shifters.

I am willing to spend the extra tenner if the XT wil show an increase in performance.

Also would it be a good idea to replace the chain and cassette at the same time. And also maybe cables?

I have the XT rear mech and i find it to be extremely smooth for shifting.

I also have the XT rear mech and its spot on. I have the LX front mech and it seems crap, it doesnt seem to want to change down from the middle cog to the bottom. I know you cant really compare the front and rear with eachother, but the XT seems a lot more reliable.

    try setting it correctly..

changing the mech will not make much difference to it hitting the chain stay it is a shimano problem. some of their mechs have a rubber bumper on them to reduce the noise.

The LX front mech on mine works beautifully, extremely smooth shifting action.
