shoes recommendation please

ok I want some new shoes for MTBing. Main reason because my current trainers are limp, a bit lifeless, seen better days, a bit torn in places - but main practical problem being that they're a bit uncomfy after a bit in that my feet get a bit sore from the pedals, like the soles are too thin.
I was going to get five tens for the grippiness but I don't really have too much of a problem with grip now (i've got dmr v12 pedals) , and I don't want to be too grippy like clipless pedals, i ride some trails where I like to be able to get my foot off the pedal quickly if i need to to save myself, and that might involve the exit of my foot from the pedal not being vertical. so I'm thinking 5-10s might not be the best for me.
Any others anyone can recommend that have got quice nice thick comfy soles, and are quite nice and supportive. budget's about fifty quid, but might stretch to a bit more.
