does anyone know what stem the trek 5200 runs? is it a standard or oversized stem, and how can you tell?

it'll be written on the bars somewhere - possibly under the stem faceplate

My mate had one about two years ago and I'm pretty sure he said it was oversised.

Depends what model year - the frame goes back about 8 years - the first ones had a quill stem. You should be able to tell by the size of the 'bulge' in the centre of the bars - the grip section of all bars is about 22mm, wheress the bulge on oversize is 32mm in comparison to 26mm on standard - if the centre bulge looks 'fat' then it's likely to be oversize.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
