I had a chain failure on my commute to work and the nearest bike shop only sold SRAM chains. I've taken the chain off since getting home as I was curious about the gold link thing and fitted a new cassette. I think my Park Tools CT-5 chain tool would be ok, but I'm curious about spare pins and links, I can only find those gold things?

that is correct you use the power link to join the chain. gold is for 9 spd and sliver for 6/7/8spd chains.

i'd never ever changed my own chain until last night, i fitted a SRAM chain with a Gold link, had to take out a few links to shorten it first, couldn't believe how easy it was, the gold link is brilliant, will only used these type chains from now on.
I'm pretty sure you won't have a problem doing it yourself manick0de.

I've got an SRAM chain thats been sitting in a ziplock bag in my cupboard for donkeys now! Personally, I've never really needed to split a chain apart from when its coming off to go in the bin.

I've just ordered a dura-ace chain and a gold SRAM link, makes it so much easier for removing to clean.
