why is there sucha huge price variance acrossthe board on heart rate monitors? surely 1 at £50 will help my training as much as one at £250? bearing in mind i am not an olympic athlete!!! :twisted:

I think the main differences are in their 'programmability', the amount of data they store and whether they are downloadable to a computer. At its most basic a HRM simply tells you in real time what your HR is. At its most complex it can tell you what you HR was for every second of your last few training sessions, it can tell you changes in altitude, air temp, the time you spent in various training 'zones', your calories burnt............ the possibilities are virtually endless.
IMO being able to download your HR after a ride to see exactly what your HR did is the only good reason to spend more than £50 or so but unless you're really pretty serious about training I personally don't think it necessary. If studying data interests you, you may disagree. Having a readout of average HR is quite useful, but by far and away the most important use I make of mine is the real-time readout............ which all the very cheapest HRMs provide.0 -

I'd suggest at least getting one with a memory that you can download to a PC - much more useful than a basic one that just gives you a readout and beeps if you are outside your training zone. You can then store a record of your workouts and with a little knowledge (or a good coach) see how best to improve your workouts to maximum effect.0

how does it read the rotations if the magnet is on the seat tube? i dont get it, you know a speedo counts the reveloutions by the magnet passing the sensor, well where do you putthe sensor andwhere do you putthe magnet?0

If the sensor is on the seat tube or down tube then it will have to stick out enough to be close enough to the magnet (which will be on the inside of the crank - at the end of the crank where the pedal spindle is). The sensor is nearly always fixed to the chainstay - on opposite side of frame to the chain.0
