Am I right in saying that almost all Mavics can accept 8,9 and 10 speed cassettes.

There is a pair of Mavic SLs (05) that are being sold locally.

How do I check out whether they will fit an 8 speed cassette. Will I need a 'spacer'? If she hasn't still got the spacer can I get them easily/quickly?

8 and 9 speed cassettes are the same width. and the freebody is the same. (10spd sorry no idea).

Shimano 10 speed cassettes are slightly narrower, so need a spacer, but you don't need one for 8 or 9 speed
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

You need a spacer with 8 speed blocks as the lock ring won't quite tighten - the spacer goes in first by the spokes - only 1mm or so thick though (that's on Aksiums)
